Basic
Tutoring Don’ts: (Level I CRLA # 5)
Don’t
talk too much
- Encourage consistency in attendance
and perseverance on the problem area, explain and teach the subject, but don’t
lecture, and don’t be a talking head.
Don’t be impatient
- Don’t expect everyone to learn at
your speed. Do you have anything
that stumps or bores you? So do
students.
Don’t
give up on a student.
- Be committed to your learner.
Never ridicule.
Don’t force a fast
pace
- Let the
learner learn at his/her own pace. Don’t force the learner beyond his/her
ability to really understand, but, also, don’t hinder a fast learner.
Don’t be disrespectful
or condescending toward students
- Don’t use sarcastic or condescending tones to
anyone. Show politeness and respect. Never use these tones and then claim
you were teasing.
Self Study: Carefully
study the information above.
Copy/paste/complete, and print your in depth answers to the following
questions. Turn your paper
into your supervisor for review and discussion, and/or participate in a
supervisor directed workshop.
- Which one of the common mistakes do you recognize in yourself?
Give an example and explain how you will remedy the problem.
- Which
one are you the least guilty of? Give
an example
- Which
“don’t” do you consider the most important, and why? Give examples.
