Techniques for Beginning
and Ending a Tutoring Session: (Level 1 CRLA # 3)
Get to Know your Tutee
Tutoring Needs:

Ask for the student’s
description of the problem

Ask the student the
title of his/her course and teacher’s name
-
Repeat the problem so
you know you have an understanding from the student’s point of view.

Be alert for
indications of student’s learning style

Outline
your plan for the session based on the student’s needs and time available.
Discuss mutual expectations

Provide
tutoring as needed using a variety of techniques, being sure to provide some
independent study time during the session, and providing both negative and
positive feedback in an educationally sound way.
End of Tutoring Session:
- Ask for feedback about
student’s understanding of discussed material.
- Encourage student to
set long and short term goals for his/her work
- Refer Student to
additional college resources
- Give any additional
handouts or information
- Make sure student has a
Learning Center schedule for a return visit, and encourage the student
to return if he/she needs help.
- Send the student on
his/her way with a smile and a word of encouragement about his/her work.
