Requirements for CRLA Regular Tutor Certification Level I

Meet Tutor Selection Criteria

  • Take a minimum of 6 credit hours of college classes during the term.

  • Interview with discipline supervisor or content faculty instructor and have written approval of either or both. (Learning Center form must be used in addition to required college forms.)

  • Grade of "A" or "B" in subject content being tutored

    • Attach copy of transcript, Or

    • Documented experience equivalent to class

  • Meet or exceed specialized discipline requirements by the Learning Center Coordinator in that discipline.

  • Demonstrate acceptable tutoring skills

  • Meet FCCJ student employment requirements

Fulfill Workshop/Study requirements outlined below:

  • Minimum of ten (10) hours of tutor training is required for CRLA Level I

    • Group Workshops (4 hours)

      • Modes include interactive discussion and films

    • Supervisor Workshop (2 hours)

      • Supervisors arrange time for small group discussion based on independent study assignments

    • Independent Study (4 hours)

      • Students work independently on selected topics for Level I, complete the reading, view the film, and complete the written work as directed.  Turn in to supervisor for review and discussion.

      • Topics covered:

        • Minimum of 8 or 4 beyond what is covered in group workshop.

  1. Definition of tutoring and tutor responsibilities

  2. Basic tutoring guide lines

  3. Techniques for successfully beginning and ending a tutoring session

  4. Some basic Tutoring Do’s

  5. Some basic Tutoring Don’ts

  6. Role Modeling (Not covered)

  7. Setting Goals/planning

  8. Communication Skills

  9. Active listening and paraphrasing

  10. Referral Skills (Not Covered)

  11. Study Skills

  12. Critical Thinking Skills

  13. Compliance with the Ethics and Philosophy of the Tutor Program

  14. Modeling problem solving (not covered)

  15. Other: Customer Service in the Learning Center

  16. Other: Tutoring Students with Learning Disabilities

  17. Other: Motivation and Procrastination


 Participate in Self and Supervisor Evaluation
  • Participate in a formal evaluation process to include a self-evaluation, written evaluation by supervisor, and an interview with supervisor. (Learning Center forms must be used)

  • Tutor will be given a copy of the evaluation form and any comments from supervisor.

Document Tutoring Experience

  • 25 documented hours of actual tutoring experience

    • Tutors must keep a time log and turn in the signed document daily.

    • Tutors may check their weekly progress by consulting Henry Moore in the accounting lab.
