Summer 2007 Cusco, Perú
Study Abroad:
Spanish, Humanities, Anthropology and Biology

Course dates: May 7, 2007 - July 30, 2007
Travel dates: June 2, 2007 – July 8, 2007

The world is your classroom! Learning a foreign language or examining the mysteries of science is greatly enhanced when experienced firsthand. Your appreciation and understanding will go far beyond what occurs within the traditional four walls of a classroom.  FCCJ’s Study Abroad, Classrooms Without Walls (Cusco, Perú), offers you a unique opportunity to study Spanish, Humanities, Anthropology and Biology while immersed in Peruvian culture. Students can earn college credit or simply participate for personal or professional enrichment.

As experienced world travelers and respected educators, Professors Dr. Enrique Barquinero, Dr. Brad Biglow and Mr. William Robichaud will lead you through this educational adventure. In addition to FCCJ, classes will be held in the field and at the famous Universidad Nacional de San Antonio Abad del Cusco (UNSAAC), a major Peruvian university founded in 1692 (315 years ago). Discover the history, culture, and biogeography of this region. Explore the incredible Amazon rain forest in remote regions of the incredible Manú Biosphere Reserve. Walk back in time as the majesty of the Peruvian Andes reveals the most important archeological discovery of the century, the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu. This unique academic setting permits you to “live the text” with hands-on experience of incredible natural resources usually admired only in books.

After studying in one of the oldest universities in the Americas and experiencing at least three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, this “Classroom Without Walls” experience is, without exaggeration, a once-in-a-lifetime educational opportunity.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

  • Broaden your intellectual horizons, deepen your knowledge and understanding of scientific, cultural, international, political, and economic issues.

  • Explore new ways of thinking and living; learn a new language to expand personal growth and independence.

  • Gain first-hand knowledge of the culture and geography of Perú.

  • Enhance employment prospects in the fields of science, business, international affairs, and government service. Employers today often search for graduates who have studied abroad. They realize the value of global exposure and know that employees with travel experience are more likely to have a greater respect for other cultures, an appreciation for growing global interdependence, a wealth of international knowledge, and will often possess second language skills.

  • Return with a more educated vision of world affairs.

  • Gain a broader understanding of, and appreciation for, our home country, its way of life, and its role in international affairs.

  • Understand the principle evolutionary mechanisms of biodiversity as well as experience firsthand the unique biodiversity of the ecosystems of Perú and South America.

  • Explore the effects of human impact on Perú’s wild habitats.
