Cooperative Learning Seminar Leaders 2003-2004
Patti Levine Brown
Cooperative learning not only empowers teachers with the ability to vary their pedagogy, but it also instills in students a sense of camaraderie and self-confidence. Of all the pedagogies I have experimented with over the past twelve years of teaching, cooperative learning is the one that has most benefited my students. Through cooperative learning, my students have learned how to give and receive constructive criticism on their papers, how to read actively, how to paraphrase accurately, and most of all, how to work together productively. When asked how long it takes to become a master teacher of cooperative learning, David and Roger Johnson, the founders of the Johnson and Johnson Model of Cooperative Learning, have responded by stating “at least one lifetime.” Eagerly embracing that challenge, I look forward to teaching future generations of community college students with whom I can share my love for cooperative learning.
