INTRODUCTION: This course is designed for students who plan to major in fields that do not require an in-depth study of mathematics. The major topics introduced in this course are set theory, symbolic logic, geometry and measurement, introductory combinatorics, probability and descriptive statistics, and history of mathematics. The logical reasoning, probability and statistics skills measured by CLAST are among the skills taught in this course.

 

PREREQUISITE: MAT 1033 with a grade of "C" or better or satisfactory score on the placement test.

POLICY AND PROCEDURES:

Academic Integrity from the College catalogue: “Academic dishonesty is considered a serious and is expressly prohibited.  This policy includes all course assessment, related assignments, and all standardized tests (e.g. CPT, CLAST, CAT).  Such dishonesty includes:

  1. cheating, which is defined as the giving or taking of any information or material with the intent of wrongfully aiding oneself or another in academic work considered in the determination of a course grade or the outcome of a standardized assessment,
  2. plagiarism, which is defined as the act of stealing or passing off as one’s own work the words, ideas or conclusions of another as if the work submitted were the product of one’s own thinking rather than an idea or product derived from another source, or
  3. any other form of inappropriate behavior which may include but is not limited to falsifying records or data, lying, unauthorized copying, tampering, abusing or otherwise unethically using computer or other stored information, and any other act or misconduct which may reasonably be deemed to be a part of this heading.

 

Any student alleged to have committed any act of academic dishonesty as defined herein, shall be entitled to due process as defined in District Board of Trustees Rule 6Hx7-2.18, prior to the administration of disciplinary action including suspension and dismissal.”

 

COURSE EVALUATION/GRADING:   There will be 3 exams and one final in this course.  Homework will be collected at least once a week.  Exams will be announced at least a week in advance.  The final exam will be on June 28 during regular class time.  Final grades will be calculated as follows:

A:  90 – 100%

B:  80 – 89%

Withdrawals:  Please refer to the college catalog and/or official college class schedule for pertinent dates for NA and FN grades, as well as the deadline date for class withdrawal.  If you decide to withdraw from the class, please see the instructor for a signature.

 

Incompletes:  Only in rare instances will an incomplete be given.  At the very least, the student must complete 75% of the assigned course work.  A request for an “I” must be made in writing at least two weeks prior to the second exam.  A request does not guarantee an approval for an incomplete.

 

Late assignments:  All work is to be completed as assigned.  If an assignment is late, it must be turned in no later than one week past the assigned due date.  A late penalty of 10% will be assessed.
