General Information:
Learning
Outcomes: Prerequisite:
MGF 1106 or MAC 1105 with a grade of "C" or better. This course is designed to introduce
students to the fundamentals of descriptive and inferential statistics with a
pronounced emphasis on inference. The major topics include methods for
analyzing sets of data, probability, probability distributions, estimation,
confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, simple linear regression, and
correlation. The probability and statistical skills measured by CLAST are among
the skills taught in this course.
How is taking hybrid
Elementary Statistics different from a traditional lecture class? A hybrid
course is a course in which major portions of the learning activities are
web-based (online), and time spent in the classroom is reduced. The hybrid
course combines the best features of in-class teaching with the best features
of online learning to promote active learning and reduce class seat time. You
will have the advantage of the flexibility of an online course, but still
benefit from time in class with your instructor and fellow class members.
In the
hybrid model, you will study differently than you do in a traditional class. In
this hybrid class, you will prepare for our weekly class meeting by completing
all the assignments throughout the week prior to our meeting. You will
watch a video lecture, read the text, complete online homework assignments and
come to class ready to discuss the week’s topics. If this were a traditional
class, you would spend 3 hours per week in class, and at least 6 hours outside
of class studying statistics. In this class, you are in class for 1.5 hours, so
you should be prepared to spend at
least 7.5 hours per week outside of class studying statistics. To be
successful in this hybrid class, you must be self-motivated and disciplined.
Attendance Policy: Regular and on-time
attendance is required to successfully complete this course. We only meet once a week, so missing a class can have a serious impact
on your grade.
Common Sense, Courtesy and
College Policy:
1. Turn
OFF cell phones, Blackberries, etc.
2. There is to be absolutely no text messaging in
class; you may not use your cell phone as a calculator.
3. It is Florida State College at Jacksonville
policy that children under 16 are not allowed in the classrooms.
Disabilities: Appropriate accommodations (such as note takers, extra time on tests, quiet testing, etc.) will be available to assist students with disabilities, provided written instructions are sent to the instructor by the Disabled Student Services Counselor.

W Grade: Students who are failing to master the concepts of the
course or who show lapsed activity in the course can elect to withdraw from the
course. Note: Monday, November 9th is
the final day to withdraw with a grade of “W”.
Course Requirements:
Typically we will cover about 1 chapter per
week. A portion of a particular week’s online
homework assignments will be due Thursday at 11:59 PM; the remaining homework,
quizzes and tests will be due Monday at 5:00 PM. In other words, a
particular week’s assignments will be split into two segments and should be essentially
completed prior to our 1:30 class meeting time. The 5:00 deadline has been
set to afford you the opportunity to retake an online quiz or test one last
time after getting some in-class clarification.
Because
“life happens” (illness, family situations, computer problems, work-related
issues), you will be allowed two occasions during the term when you can
submit to me a request to extend a particular week’s online assignments. Such an extension will be for one week –
extending the due date until the following Monday. So don’t wait until the Sunday after the
initial due date to make your request, as that will leave you only one day to
complete everything you were late on. I
will provide you with a separate online form for you to complete and email to
me to initiate such a request. After the one week extension, assignments
will not be accepted, period. You may work ahead of schedule, but do not
fall behind!
1. Online Homework: Click
on the Do Homework tab to see the 33
different homework section assignments. When
you complete a particular homework assignment, your grades will be
automatically submitted to me. You may
work problems over and over again until you get a desirable grade; even after
submitting a homework assignment you can go back to it later in the day or week
and rework problems to improve your score, up to the due date. You will have access to “Help Me Solve” and
“View an Example” buttons to help you get through most of these problems. If you are still stuck, you can always click
on “Ask My Instructor”; I will often respond the same day, but at most within
48 hours.
2.
Online Quizzes: There will be 9 online quizzes (for the most
part, each one associated with a single chapter), accessed via the Take a Quiz/Test tab. Problems on these online quizzes will be just
like the homework problems. The only
differences are: 1) you will not have access to “Help Me Solve”, “View an
Example” or “Ask My Instructor” buttons; 2) once you start on a quiz you must
complete it and submit it – you can’t go back to it later; 3) you will have 3
attempts at each quiz, but each retake requires you to take the entire quiz
over, not just the ones you missed. If you do not achieve a good score on your
first attempt, you can review the quiz to see which problems you missed and
even print out the quiz before attempting a retake (which will have similar
problems). Your best attempt will be recorded as your score.
3. Online Unit
Tests: There will be 4 online unit tests that will
cover multiple chapters, accessed via the Take
a Quiz/Test tab. Like the homework
and quizzes, problems will still be multiple-choice, but may have a somewhat
different format or wording. Unit tests
will operate much like quizzes: 1) you will not have access to “Help Me Solve”,
“View an Example” or “Ask My Instructor” buttons; 2) once you start on a test
you must complete it and submit it – you can’t go back to it later; 3) you will
have 3 attempts at each test, but each retake requires you to take the entire test
over, not just the ones you missed. If you do not achieve a good score on your
first attempt, you can review the test to see which problems you missed and
even print out the test before attempting a retake (which will have similar
problems). Your best attempt will be recorded as your score.
4. Midterm Exam: Your midterm exam will be an in-class exam covering Chapters 1 through 6. The midterm exam is a pencil and paper test and may contain both free-response and
multiple-choice questions, similar to those found on the practice midterm
(posted up under Chapter Contents after Chapter 6). You will not be
provided with any tables, since you can use your TI calculator to answer such
questions without needing to refer to the tables. You
may bring a hand-written or originally typed (not copied), regular size
(8-1/2 x 11) sheet of notebook paper – one side - with any notes, formulas,
examples, etc. that you desire. This
“cheat sheet” will be collected along with your exam. No other notes, formula cards, or books will
be allowed.
5. Final Exam: Your final exam will be a two-hour exam covering Chapters 7 through 11. The final exam is a pencil and paper test and may contain both free-response and
multiple-choice questions, similar to those found on the practice final (posted
up under Chapter Contents after Chapter 11). You will be provided with
tables (t, chi-square and r), which may be necessary to use on certain problems
even with your TI calculator. You may bring a hand-written or
originally typed (not copied), regular size (8-1/2 x 11) sheet of notebook
paper – one side - with any notes, formulas, examples, etc. that you
desire. This “cheat sheet” will be
collected along with your exam. No other
notes, formula cards, or books will be allowed.
6. Participation: You will be put into teams for participation
purposes.
• Discussion
Board: Twice each week each team will
be expected to answer a question or two I email you about the material being
covered. For your first posting of the
week, I will email you a question on Monday for your team to answer by Wednesday.
In that email I will name who will be the team leader for the question. That
person should be the first to post what they feel is the correct answer and why
(where in the notes, video, or text did you find something to support your
answer). Teammates are to respond by stating why they agree or why they
disagree. Teammates may also provide help if the leader is "clueless"
as to how/where to find the answer. The leader will be responsible for posting
the group's final response to the question. The process will be repeated for
the second question of the week, which will be emailed to you on Thursday and
due by Sunday. Note: these discussion
forums are within CourseCompass, not
in Blackboard.
• In-class
Group Assignment: At the start of each weekly class session, students will
work in groups to complete a written assignment. The first part of the
assignment will involve recording the group’s discussion about the prior week’s
material, noting what problems problems/issues with the material you as a group
were able to resolve and what problems/issues you are still “fuzzy” about. The second part of the written assignment
will include problems that will require the student to apply and integrate
knowledge learned in class and through online assignments. You will turn in one assignment for the group
(although each group member will keep a copy). Make-ups will not be allowed for
written assignments. If a written assignment is missed, a grade of zero
will be recorded.
7. Extra
Credit: You can earn extra credit points by completing the
following:
• (10
pts) Getting “set up” in the course by the first week of class. This means that by September 6th you
will have 1) purchased your course materials (or at least your CourseCompass
access code), 2) registered in CourseCompass (MyStatLab), 3) posted your introduction
to the discussion board and 4) watched videos covering sections 1.2 – 1.4,
completed the online homework for these sections and taken Online Quiz 1
(covering Chapter 1).
• (10 pts @) Excel
“Mini-Projects”: These 4 mini-project will afford you the opportunity to get a little experience using computer
software to do statistical applications.
Since Microsoft Office is so widespread, I have created these
mini-projects to be completed with Excel. Detailed instructions
for each project and data sets are under the Excel Mini-Projects tab in
MyStatLab.
Course
Schedule: The entire 16-week schedule is shown on the following
page. Do not fall behind and don’t wait until Sunday night to try to
complete an entire week’s assignments! Schedule several hours at least 3
days a week for this course and use all available resources. In addition to the textbook, videos and
interactive MyStatLab software, you may also make use of the College’s Library
Learning Commons (LLC – G200/G300).
Tutors are available who can help you from 7:30 AM to 8 PM Monday
through Thursday, from7:30 AM to 3 PM Friday and from 9 AM to 3 PM Saturday.
Course
Contract: is located under the Course Documents tab of
CourseCompass. You are required to email this contract to your instructor by
the first week of class. Also, fill out the indicated student information
at the bottom of the contract. By emailing the course contract, it is
understood to be electronically signed and binding for the term. If you fail to
email the Course Contract to your instructor by the first week of class, you
will be dropped from the course. You are not an official member of the class
until your instructor receives this form.
MYSTATLAB: Homework, quizzes and tests are to be
completed online using MyStatLab, an online enhancement to
the course. You can work from your own
personal computer or from one of those on campus. To
get started in MyStatLab, you will need a valid FSCJ email address, the course
ID code (see below) and the student
access code from your book package.
1. Registration/Student Access Code - You will initially register and subsequently log in
at: http://coursecompass.com.
The access code is an individual, course-specific 6-word code needed for registration as a CourseCompass
student. A Student Access Code is packaged in a CourseCompass Student Access
Kit with your new hard copy book. The kit or book itself will include a
pull-back strip that reveals the code. If you buy a book without a MyMathLab
access code, you may purchase an access code online at the site above.
o Course ID Code - The code for this course is:
rappoport24386
o Use 32246 as the zip code for the school. Technical
Support: 1-800-677-6337.
o Click here to launch the
MyStatLab software installation wizard. This wizard will walk you through the
installation of the software you will need to successfully view all content in
MyStatLab. Note: if you do not download the required plug-ins, you
will not be able to view the homework or quiz problems!!
System requirements are shown below.
