"Lemon Coconut Cookie Recipe"
by Emily Kuznia
Gather your prisoners from all corners of the kitchen:
Lemon from the chilly climate of the refrigerator,
Baking powder from deep within the forest of spice bottles,
Brown sugar from the crowded cliffs of the pantry.
Throw sugar and butter into the pit,
mangle with whirling blades,
until the bowl is spattered messy and sweet.
Bludgeon the kidnapped egg,
shatter its armor and undress it.
Spill the blood of the lemon,
and scrape away its skin.
Inject with vanilla.
Smother with flour.
Infect with baking powder.
Hack the flesh of the almonds.
Shred the meat of the coconut.
Unsheathe your wooden spoon,
and strike with vicious swings.
Scrape clean the arena,
of its slain occupants,
and clump them onto a tray.
Now scorch the mash of victims,
in your dark, blistering furnace.
Soon the blitz will be complete,
and you’ll savor the taste of your victory.
