| Since you will be working independently, you should allow a minimum of 10 to 12 hours per week to complete the assignments. I hope you find working with this course a pleasant, rewarding, and informative experience. |
Distance learning students must make a commitment to their mastery of the course objectives. To be successful, you should be self-motivated, comfortable working alone, and able to resolve computer problems on your own. Visit the FCCJ Distance Learning page www.distancelearning.org, scroll down the Online Web page and follow the link "Is Distance Learning Right for Me?" quiz to determine your aptitude for successful completion of a course in an online learning environment.
This OST 1100 course is delivered through the WebCT management system; therefore, you should also follow the WebCT link. At the WebCT Web page select the Customer Care link, where you will find resources if you need help using WebCT.

Your class will be available on September 3, and by this time you should have read and printed a copy of the syllabus, which details pertinent information regarding the course (the textbook and other materials needed, computer and software requirements, attendance, and evaluation).
Keyboarding Program CD. Your text materials kit includes a program CD that is needed to install the Glencoe keyboarding program on your hard drive in order to access the lessons presented in the textbook. Before opening your text materials, be sure that the kit is the home use version that includes the program CD. You cannot use your Student Data Disk without the program CD. Do not purchase a text kit without the program CD; the correct kit has the ISBN 0078275784.
Data Disk Files. You must have the student data disk files by September 3 in order to maintain the assignment schedule. The files for the course are on the Student Data Disk that accompanies your text. Please make at least two copies of this disk before you begin your lessons and use one of the copied disks rather than the original to record your lessons.
You might wish to store a copy of the original files on your hard drive so that you always have access to the original files in case you run into problems as you are working.

Class membership. Check into the class during the first week (beginning September 3); those who do not generally are not successful. Students who have not established their presence in the class by September 13, 2002, will receive an AW grade, which is an official withdrawal from the class. Therefore, before September 13 you must have sent an e-mail to me at bradford@fccj.org, using the subject: OST 1100, Ref. No. 161012, and including the following information in the message area:
