Database Concepts for Microcomputers

COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

Prerequisite:  CGS 1060 or CGS 1570.  This course is aimed at familiarizing students with the roles and advantages of databases.  A series of database application projects on microcomputers is designed to build familiarity with creating, loading, maintaining, and updating the database.  Conducting database queries and building database reports are covered.  Microsoft Access is the database program used in this course.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

 

      Level I - Create and modify tables, queries, forms, and reports
      Level II - Work with more advanced queries, custom forms and reports, HTML documents, data access pages, and integrate Access with other programs 
      Level III - Use query wizards, action queries, briefcase replication, macros, and Visual Basic for Applications code
      Complete an assigned project

Microsoft Access 2000, Comprehensive, New Perspectives Series, by Joseph J. Adamski, Kathleen T. Finnegan and Charles Hommel, 1999.

Student Guide to WebCT, New Perspective Series

Textbooks are available at any campus bookstore; look in the Distance Learning section.  You may also order books online at www.efollett.com.    

DISKS

<  A 100MB IBM Zip disk is recommended, as you may have some difficulty storing the Access database files on a 3.5-inch high-density disk.

Hard drive.  You may also store your files on your hard drive; however, you should maintain a backup copy of your files.

SOFTWARE

Access 2000; previous versions of Access are not acceptable.  If you do not have Access 2000, you can purchase the MS Office 2000 Premium software at an FCCJ bookstore for $199.95.  This package includes Access 2000 as well as Word 2000, Excel 2000, and PowerPoint 2000.

Access to the Internet so that you can send and receive e-mail and e-mail  attachmentsWebCT does not support AOL's browser, which can cause you some problems.  If you use AOL, you are responsible for working within its browser limitations.

An up-to-date virus checker program (such as McAfee or Norton) so that you do not transmit a virus to anyone with whom you exchange e-mail attachments.

 

HARDWARE

 

Your computer must be running Windows 95 or higher.  A Macintosh capable of running the required course software is also acceptable.

EVALUATION

 

       Three tests (Level I, Level II, and Level III) and a project are scheduled.   Make-up tests will not be given.  The tests and project represent 60 percent of your final grade.
      Assignments are due by the scheduled due date.  Late work will not be graded.
      Assignments will be evaluated on the number of assignments completed by the due date as well as by correctness, completeness, and appearance. Unit assignments represent 40 percent of your final grade.
      Participation within WebCT.
      No Incomplete or NP (non punitive) grade will be given for this online course.  The last day for a student to withdraw is November 9.

 

ATTENDANCE

 

On-line class attendance is accomplished by visiting the class Web site, reading the materials found on the site, reading e-mail received from the instructor, sending e-mail to the instructor, and participating in the Bulletin Board threaded discussions.  You are expected to participate in these activities on a regular basis and should check your e-mail and the Bulletin Board at least three times a week.
