Text:     Langan, John. Sentence Skills, latest edition (whatever form the bookstore ordered).

Course Description: This course is an introductory course in composition designed to help students gain greater proficiency in basic writing skills. The course assesses the level at which students are writing to discover individual areas of deficiency in writing skills and provides the necessary instruction to help them overcome these deficiencies. As a result of carefully planned learning experiences, students should be able to write, clear, adequately developed, logically-organized effective sentences which conform to the conventions of standard American English.

Course Objectives (Cognitive): At the end of this course, you will be able to:

1) Write sentences with correct grammatical usage

2) Write sentences with correct mechanics

3) Write sentences in varied form

4) Write sentences with logical, precise, and concrete wording

Course Objectives (Affective): At the end of this course, you will be able to write sentences and basic sentence sets with:

            1) Greater confidence

2) Greater certainty

3) Greater enjoyment

Course Credit: To receive credit for this course, you must pass the course exit exam at the end of the term. Passing this test means you move on to ENC 0021 the next term (if you so desire). You also have the opportunity to write an exit paragraph (the same test that ENC 0021 students write); however, you do not have to write a passing 0021 exit paragraph to pass ENC 0001.

Course Grades: Your grade, assuming you pass the department exit final exam, will be based on your class attendance, class participation, and class work in combination with your exit test score. If you do not pass the exit exam, you will receive an NF for this course and must take the course again (so pass the silly test the first time and be done with it, OK?).

90-100     A

80-89       B

70-79              C

Academic Dishonesty:    Don't do it. Read the most current college catalogue for a detailed statement on FCCJ's policy regarding academic dishonesty. Do your own work.

Course Requirements:

  1) You must do all the in-class and homework assignments when they are assigned.

Course Attendance: Attendance is mandatory in this course. You are permitted nine class hours (9) or 15 per cent absences only during the term. After the ninth absence, no matter the reason, you will automatically receive an F for the course. There are absolutely no exceptions made for this attendance policy. You may take this class twice only at the in-state tuition rate; if you have to take the class for a third time, you must pay out-of-state tuition (very expensive)—so, again, pass the class the first time, okay?

Personal Statement from Your Instructor: I love language in general and the English language in particular. I also enjoy teaching the English language a great deal. As a professor, I see myself as a skilled learner and a mentor to my students. I believe you are very worthy, extremely intelligent, and very imaginative individuals. You have to be to be a human being. I will work hard in class, but I will also have a great deal of fun. I expect you to work hard and have fun along with me and learn even more than you need to move on to ENC 0021 and then ENC 1101.

Peace and blessings.
