ORIENTATION MEETING – MANDATORY

There is only one required on-campus meeting for all LIT 2000 telecourse students.  This is your opportunity to meet your professor and your fellow students and discuss any concerns you may have about course requirements.  Attend the orientation.  Please contact me if the orientation time conflicts with another class meeting.

Wednesday, February 9, 2005 at South Campus, Room M2222 (west side of the campus) from 6:00-7:30 p.m. sharp

A Practice CLAST Writing will be administered at Orientation

IMPORTANT NOTE:  You must attend orientation or contact me by phone or email within the first two weeks of class – by February 21, 2005.  If you do not make any contact, you will be dropped from the course.

REQUIRED MEETINGS AND EXAMS

Complete the Alternate Site Test Location Form to designate your selected test site for the term and bring it with you to the orientation.  If I do not receive your Alternate Site Test Location Form, you will test with me for the duration of the term.

Testing - see Exam Schedule.

ASSIGNMENT INFORMATION

To be successful, the weekly assignments for this course need to be completed during those time frames.  Do not fall behind - call me immediately if you experience any problem with the assignments.

The writing assignments for the course follow:

·         One (1) informal writing assignment in a Response Journal each week. The responses should be 150-200 words in length.  The informal writing assignments will be turned in – in order – in a folder when you report for each exam.

These assignments should be your reactions to the stories, poems or plays and/or your reactions to the videos. In these journals, we want you to have an opportunity to express your feelings about what you are seeing or reading, but, please do not summarize the selections.

·         Two (2) formal writing assignments.  Each Assignment will be 750-1000 words in length. You will be able to choose the genre for these writing assignments – short story, poetry or drama.

These themes are intended more as thoughtful responses to the works of literature in the 3 different genres   rather than as research or term papers. It is original ideas which will merit higher grades, provided the paper      has no serious grammatical errors. You will want to use examples from the short stories, poems or plays to      support your views, but please, do not summarize the selections in your papers.  No rewrites are accepted.

·         One(1) formal research paper on the novel of your choice selected from a list provided at orientation.  Novels from the Norton Critical Editions can be purchased from any commercial bookstore or on-line. You must submit your choice, in writing, at the first exam.

The research paper should be a minimum of 1,000 words in length following the Modern Language    Association (MLA) style of documentation. You may refer to your textbook beginning with page 1887 for     guidance on documenting sources using the MLA style or you may consult any recent handbook (i.e.       Harbrace, Bedford, etc).

For a refresher on research writing techniques, selected lessons from the ENC 1102 telecourse will be run    concurrently with the LIT 2000 course. See Airing Schedule for exact times.

Use the following heading for your papers:

                                    LITERATURE 2000

                                    Name________________________________________

                                    Date_________________________________________

                                    Title of Assignment____________________________

Errors in sentence structure, verb tenses, punctuation, paragraphing, grammar and spelling will deduct from the grade.  A handbook on writing would be an invaluable aid.

No children, no cell phones, no beepers allowed in the testing area.

GRADING INFORMATION

Grading Method

The grades from the tests and written assignments determine your final grade.

Grades will be distributed in the following manner:

25%      Research Paper

25%      1st Formal Paper

25%      2nd Formal Paper

25%      Tests and Informal Writing Assignments

Test results

Test grades are mailed to your home address.

Expect to receive grades within 10 working days.

Makeup Tests

You must contact the instructor to schedule a make-up test, which will only be given one time, in the event an emergency prevents you from taking the test on the assigned date.

Grading Scale

90 - 100 = A

80 -  89 = B

70 -  79 = C

60 -  69 = D

Below 60 = F

Grading Policies

“W” Grade – A student may withdraw without academic penalty at FCCJ from any course up to the last withdrawal date published for each session. The student may only withdraw from the same course twice. Upon the third attempt, the student will not be permitted to withdraw and will receive an A, B, C, D, FN, or F grade for the course.

“I” Grade – The Incomplete grade may be assigned at the instructor’s discretion to students who are unable to complete the required work in the academic term. To be eligible for an “I” grade the student must be passing the course at the time of the request, and must have completed 75% of the course work. Documentation may be requested. The instructor will complete a written agreement detailing the remaining course work required for completion and the removal of the “I” grade. All work must be completed within the first eight weeks of the subsequent term, unless the instructor agrees to a longer timeframe (not to exceed one year).  If terms of the agreement are not met, the “I” grade will automatically change to an “F” grade.

“FN” Grade  - The Failure for Non-attendance (FN) grade is given to students who failed due to nonattendance, while the “F” grade is given to students who failed to master the content at a passing level. The FN grade may be used immediately after the withdrawal deadline.  For this course non-attendance is defined as not submitting the assignments by the scheduled date published on the Syllabus. ___________________________________________________________________________________________

GRADE FORGIVENESS AND COURSE REPEATS

Grade Forgiveness – A student may repeat a course in an attempt to improve a grade if a “D”, “FN” or “F” was previously earned. A course grade may only be forgiven twice. The official grade and the grade used in calculating the GPA, shall be the last grade earned in the course.

Course Repeats and Tuition Costs – a student may have only three total attempts in any course, including the original grade, repeat grade, and withdrawals. Upon the third attempt in the course the student must be given an “A”, “B”, “C”, “FN” or “F”.

A student may enroll in a specific college credit course only twice at a regular tuition rate.  If the first two attempts are unsuccessful (all grades will count as an attempt, including audit, W, F, FN and D), the third time a student enrolls in the course he/she must pay full cost of instruction. This cost is equivalent to the out-of-state tuition rate, approximately four times the cost of regular tuition.
